Village Capital launches NWA investment facility
Washington, D.C.-based venture capital firm Village Capital recently launched a first-of-its-kind flexible investment facility supporting Northwest Arkansas-based startups. The Walton Family Foundation provided $700,000 to support the VilCap Innovative Capital Facility NWA.
This is Village Capital’s first place-based investment facility in Arkansas. It offers both revenue-based debt and redeemable equity, or equity that can be bought back through a percentage of revenue.
According to a news release, many startups building across supply chain, food systems and health often struggle to access capital because they don’t fit traditional financing models. The facility is expected to close the financing gap through revenue-based financing, with repayment tied to business performance rather than a fixed schedule. Repayments fluctuate with revenue, meaning founders aren’t locked into fixed payments during slower periods and, in the long term, offer a non-dilutive financing opportunity.
“We’re designing the facility to support early-stage, growing businesses that often fall into the ‘missing middle’ of the capital spectrum — too advanced for grants but not yet the right fit for traditional debt or venture capital,” according to Village Capital. “The facility also brings local market expertise into the investment process by working with organizations deeply embedded in the Northwest Arkansas entrepreneurial ecosystem.
These partners help identify promising companies, strengthen investment decisions, and build awareness of innovative financing options across the region.”
Over the next year, the facility will invest up to $150,000 in approximately five Northwest Arkansas startups with at least $100,000 in annual revenue. The Walton Family Foundation is supporting the facility’s financing component.
The facility is launching as a one-year pilot with the intent to extend it “if we validate demand for these financing tools in Northwest Arkansas,” according to Village Capital. “Beyond making investments, the pilot will generate valuable insights into the region’s financing landscape and help identify where capital gaps exist, informing future approaches to supporting entrepreneurs and attracting additional flexible capital to the region.”
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. Recipients will be announced on a rolling basis, with the first group of portfolio companies expected to be named in the fourth quarter of this year.
