Venice Film Festival 2026: Dates, venue, films, stars and key highlights

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival runs from September 2 to September 12, 2026, on Venice's Lido. The festival is officially recognised by FIAPF (the International Federation of Film Producers Associations) and positions itself as a platform for promoting international cinema as art, entertainment and industry. The event opens on Wednesday, September 2, with the world premiere of Danny Boyle's tabloid-media drama Ink.Where is Venice Film Festival 2026 being held?The festival takes place on the Lido di Venezia, the island that has hosted the Venice Film Festival since its early years. The main events are centred around the Palazzo del Cinema, including the Sala Grande, where the opening ceremony and world premiere of Ink will take place.Other screenings are held at venues across the Lido, including the Sala Darsena and PalaBiennale. The festival's official programme also includes sections such as Venezia 83, Orizzonti, Venice Spotlight, Venice Classics and Venice Immersive.Venice Film Festival 2026 opening jury press conference to go aheadThe festival had initially announced that it would skip its customary opening jury press conference, citing a scheduling conflict. The decision was followed by speculation and criticism, particularly because the festival is facing political pressure over the Israel-Gaza war.More than 200 filmmakers and artists have signed an open letter organised by the Venice4Palestine collective, pressing the festival to take concrete action over the conflict. The group has also asked that the Palestinian flag be flown throughout the event. Unlike last year, however, no large-scale protests are currently planned.The festival has now reversed its decision and confirmed that the opening jury press conference will go ahead. Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda returns with Look Back, about two small-town girls chasing careers as manga artists, while Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong examines labour and freedom through two married couples in Possible Love.New work is also expected from Werner Herzog and Nanni Moretti.Major documentaries at Venice Film Festival 2026Two documentaries stand out for their scale and subject matter.Alex Gibney's nearly four-hour film on Elon Musk was roughly four years in the making and draws on interviews with hundreds of sources. Gibney has said the finished film presents Musk less as an inventor and more as an operator skilled at building an image that is not always backed by substance. Musk had earlier dismissed the project as a "hit piece" on social media.Separately, Julia Loktev's nearly six-hour My Undesirable Friends: Part II — Exile continues her documentation of independent Russian journalists who fled the country following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The film follows their lives over four years of open-ended exile.Women directors and gender representation at Venice 2026Representation remains a major talking point at this year's festival.Only one film in the main competition is directed by a woman — Danish-Egyptian filmmaker May El-Toukhy. The figure echoes a similar shortfall in 2018, when the festival pledged to achieve gender parity in competition by 2020. That target has still not been met.Filmmaker Laura Poitras, one of only seven women to have won the festival's top Golden Lion prize, returns with a short film co-directed with Rachel Lauren Mueller about US Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in Minneapolis.
