Vehicle collision knocks out power to thousands in southeast Winnipeg

Manitoba Hydro estimates it could take 4-6 hours to fully restore service

A large section of southeast Winnipeg was without power Wednesday night, after Manitoba Hydro says a vehicle collided with an electrical box in the Southdale area.

Hydro spokesperson Peter Chura said the crash happened at about 6:15 p.m., knocking out power to approximately 2,800 customers.

In an email to CBC at 7:17 p.m., Chura said it could take between four and six hours for crews to fix the damage and fully restore power, although that estimate could change as the work proceeds.

Meanwhile, he said crews were working to bypass the damaged line and restore service to "at least some of the affected area."

By 10 p.m., the outages appeared to have spread, with all of Sage Creek affected, as well as several areas west of the original outages.
