UNESCO and CECC/SICA Present Regional Assessment on Artificial Intelligence and Cultural and Creative Industries
UNESCO and the Educational and Cultural Coordination of the Central American Integration System (CECC/SICA) have published the Exploratory Assessment on the Adoption, Impact and Governance of Artificial Intelligence in the Cultural and Creative Industries of the SICA Region, a study that provides a regional perspective on the challenges and opportunities that this technology presents for the cultural and creative sectors.
The publication examines the level of adoption of artificial intelligence tools across the cultural and creative industries, as well as their potential implications for the creation, production, and distribution of cultural content. It also identifies trends, needs, and common concerns shared by stakeholders throughout the SICA member countries.
Among its findings, the assessment highlights the importance of strengthening technical capacities and specialized training, while advancing governance frameworks that help protect creators' rights and intellectual property in digital environments. The study also underscores the need to promote ethical approaches that support technological development without undermining the diversity of the region’s cultural expressions.
The publication is intended to serve as a reference tool for policymakers, cultural institutions, academia, and stakeholders in the creative industries seeking to better understand the implications of artificial intelligence for Central America’s cultural ecosystem.
This joint effort by UNESCO and CECC/SICA contributes to generating evidence that can support regional dialogue and the development of strategies to harness the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence, while promoting cultural rights, cultural diversity, and the sustainable development of the creative sector.
