Trump, House Speaker Johnson expected to meet with tech CEOs on AI next week: Sources

President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and tech CEOs are expected to meet on artificial intelligence next week, according to multiple sources familiar with the scheduled meeting.

The meeting, set for Tuesday, Sept. 29, comes as leaders of the nation’s largest AI companies are issuing dire warnings about the threat of AI and calling for steps to slow it down before it outsmarts humans.

Trump has repeatedly called claims about the threat of AI a “hoax” and has appeared to reject the idea that new regulations are needed.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to ABC News when asked about the meeting.

There has also been growing pressure on Congress to regulate AI, but the House of Representatives has left town early until after the midterms.

Johnson has expressed support for a meeting to occur with tech CEOs and Trump to discuss AI.

“There'll be a deliberate discussion about the responsibility of the companies to maintain safety, and what role, if any, the government has to play in that.” Johnson told reporters last week.

It is unclear which tech CEOs will attend the expected meeting next Tuesday.

Last week, Trump said he would move to create a new "AI Force" and promised to appoint a new AI czar even as he continued to downplay concerns about the potential dangers of the technology.

Earlier this month, some of the leaders of top AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, called for slowing the pace of AI development.

At the time Trump responded that the warnings were a "HOAX" and that there was a "SICK conspiracy" going on around AI.

"AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX," Trump wrote in a social media post.
