Toronto under severe thunderstorm alert: Environment Canada

Torrential downpours, 90-110km/h wind gusts and quarter-to-ping-pong size hail possible, weather agency says

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Toronto, which could bring torrential downpours, strong wind gusts, and hail to the city Tuesday, Environment Canada warns.

The national weather agency said the impact could be felt late Tuesday morning to early evening.

Local rainfall amounts could be over 50 millimeters, with wind gusts between 90-110 km/h and "quarter to ping pong ball size hail" possible, the alert said. Southwestern Ontario faces the greatest likelihood for damaging winds.

The main hazards will be heavy rainfall and wind, which could damage roofs, fences and trees, Environment Canada said. Local power outages are also possible.

Environment Canada categorized the thunderstorm warning as a yellow alert on its colour-coded alert system.

Those types of alerts are the most common and warn of moderate, localized and short-term impacts .
