Environment Canada radar confirms tornado in Windsor-Essex

Hundreds are without power, mostly in south and west Windsor

Environment Canada radar has confirmed a tornado swept across parts of Windsor-Essex Thursday afternoon.

As of 5 p.m. Environment Canada says severe thunderstorms capable of producing a tornado were located over Wheatley Provincial Park.

Earlier, the warning fell over Windsor, LaSalle and parts of Essex County including Amherstburg, McGregor, Colchester, Harrow and Essex.

"This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," Environment Canada warned.

According to the weather agency, the risk of a tornado falls in line with thunderstorms across lower Michigan this afternoon and evening. Strong winds, hail and heavy rain are also possible.

Wind gusts could reach 110 km/h and hail could reach the size of a ping pong ball, Environment Canada cautioned.

People are urged to take cover if threatening weather approaches.

"If no shelter is available, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris," Environment Canada says. "If you are out on the water when threatening weather approaches, return to shore and seek shelter, if possible, or move directly away from the path of the tornado."

Thousands without power in Windsor

Enwin's outage map shows more than 1,600 without power, mostly in south and west Windsor.

Downtown, Walkerville and Ford City are all without outages, Enwin's outage map shows as of 5:00 p.m.
