Tornado formed north of Kemptville last weekend, researchers say

There were no reports of injury during the storm

Tornado researchers have confirmed that a twister hit an area near Kemptville, Ont., last Sunday.

The tornado emerged when a storm passed through, causing damage to trees and fields, according to Western University's Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP).

A survey found tree damage indicating it reached a maximum wind speed of 115 km/h over a short, narrow path, researchers said.

They estimate that the tornado started at 3:45 p.m. and travelled 1.18 kilometres northeast.

The team gave the event an EF0 rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale — the lowest category used to classify tornadoes and downbursts. Ratings range from EF0 to EF5.

No injuries were reported, the NTP said.

Environment Canada had issued a yellow-level rainfall warning for eastern Ontario and western Quebec that weekend, warning that between 50 and 100 millimetres of rain could fall.
