The Portuguese diaspora making an outsized impact on the Swiss business community

While Switzerland is home to citizens from many walks of life, the Portuguese community is one of its largest, with roughly 270,000 people. These Portuguese nationals are finding great success in the country, creating a substantial base of entrepreneurs, financial professionals and technology leaders, among others.

However, it’s not just startups and SMEs. Many influential Portuguese business figures in Switzerland operate in privately held companies and regional enterprises.

In fact, trade between the two countries has grown by nearly 50%.

According to Ambassador Denis Knobel, “The trade development is positive and growing on both sides, with a trade surplus on the Portuguese side regarding exports to Switzerland, which by 2022 stood at €110 million, with a combined trade of 2.3Bn Swiss francs, or €2.3Bn, and 1.3Bn Swiss francs in services.”

No matter the type of company, these business leaders are helping to strengthen the Swiss economy and build stronger ties between the two countries thanks to their business ventures.

Innovative minds head to Switzerland

Switzerland today is home to many Portuguese founders and entrepreneurs who’ve decided to launch build their business venture in the country.

First off is Daniel Guedelha, who a prominent figure in the Swiss-located Portuguese diaspora thanks to his work as founder and CEO of GenH, based in Basel, which is known as being a hub for pharmaceutical innovation in Europe.

Guedelha has over 20 years of global experience the pharmaceutical industry, specializing in strategic consulting, biotech advisory, and executive education. This served as the inspiration to found his healthcare consultancy, GenH, to reshape healthcare and drive impactful solutions.

Another prominent business leader in Switzerland is Fernando Gasper Barros, who’s responsible for the global cultural movement known as Brands Like Bands. A thought leaders in company culture, his company is most well known for the Brands Like Bands festival, the world’s only music event dedicated exclusively to live bands formed within companies, bringing everyday professionals out of the garage and onto the stage.

The festival is currently touring across cities in Europe, with Barros at the helm. As the founder of Brands Like Bands, he’s been working with companies navigating growth and transformation where strong company culture is a driver of improved performance within the organization.

Portuguese executives forging stronger ties with Switzerland

However, it’s not only Portuguese founders that have chosen to relocate to Switzerland. Many Portuguese business executives and leaders have not only been able to build highly successful careers in Switzerland, but their positive work has helped to further strengthen business ties and diplomatic relations between the two nations.

For example, Rogério Janelas was responsible for leading the Swiss expansion of Portuguese SAP consulting firm ROFF into the Swiss market, building a significant presence in French-speaking Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Marina Prévost-Mürier is the President of the Swiss-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services (CCISSP), one of the most important institutions fostering trade and investment between Switzerland and Portugal.

Finally, Manuel Ramalho is a long-standing advocate for Swiss-Portuguese economic cooperation, while Bernardo Corrêa de Barros is an influential figure in bilateral business relations.
