Texas Tech climbs again in U.S. News & World Report rankings

Texas Tech University made another significant jump in the 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings released Tuesday, marking the fourth straight year the university has risen in the rankings.

Texas Tech’s latest ranking of No. 186 overall is an increase of 12 spots from 2026, while the No. 96 mark among public universities in the U.S. is an increase of 13 places from a year ago, according to a news release. Only two other Power Four universities rose in the rankings more than Texas Tech.

“Moving into the top 100 among public universities is an encouraging reflection of the progress Texas Tech continues to make,” President Lawrence Schovanec said. “That progress is driven by the commitment of our faculty and staff, the accomplishments of our students and a focus on student success and academic excellence. While rankings are only one measure of a university, the consistent improvement we’re seeing reflects the strength and momentum of Texas Tech.”

Texas Tech improved in almost every category ranked by U.S. News & World Report. The university climbed 12 spots to No. 120 in Best Value and 17 spots to No. 128 in Best for Veterans. Texas Tech also appeared at No. 63 in a new category – Best Value for In-State Students among all U.S. universities.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings weren’t the only ones where Texas Tech has recently made gains.

In the 2026-27 Forbes America’s Top Colleges rankings, Texas Tech again made a significant jump, up 12 spots from a year ago to No. 149. Forbes rates the top 500 universities in the U.S. It is the highest mark Texas Tech has achieved in the Forbes rankings.

Texas Tech also was ranked No. 64 of 217 among public universities and fourth in the state among public universities. The university also ranked in the top third among schools in the state and in the top half of schools in the Big 12 Conference.

Also released were the Niche rankings, which are based on student-submitted surveys and factual data. Texas Tech continued a string of six straight years of improved rankings, jumping to No. 103 out of 2,606 universities and No. 43 out of all 860 public universities listed. Texas Tech also ranked third among 32 state public universities.
