Tech workers are retiring early as they don’t want to deal with AI-related changes: Report
A growing number of technology workers are choosing early retirement rather than adapting to the rapid workplace changes brought on by artificial intelligence, Fortune reported. Retirement experts cited in the report said some veteran employees view the AI transition as an additional hurdle late in their careers and are opting to step away instead.
The trend appears to be most visible among older professionals who have already navigated multiple technological shifts over decades in the industry. While many continue to learn and use AI tools, others see limited value in investing significant time and effort into mastering another major technology before retirement.
“For tech people, one of the distinctive features is that the learning curve of getting up to speed on a new technology can be a lot of effort,” Steve McConnell, a retirement planning advisor and founder of Rain Dog Financial, told Fortune, adding that many workers believe the impact of AI has been overstated. “One of the things that tech workers have to do over a few times over the course of the career, is they need to make a decision whether they want to jump onto the next tech wave and ride that or not.”
The shift comes as AI adoption transforms hiring, job responsibilities and workplace expectations across the technology sector. Companies have increasingly prioritised AI skills and investments, prompting workers to reassess their long-term career plans.
And the choice to retire under current circumstances can be complicated. A Seattle-based financial adviser and founder of Scaled Finance, Kevin Estes told Fortune that his clients weighing retirement have to accept that if they leave now, “you may not be able to get back on the merry-go-round.”
Some people, he added, don't want to engage with the new wave of technology and are choosing not to engage with it.
