Summit’s good vibes mask an intensifying Trump

Tokyo | China did not walk away from Donald Trump and Xi Jinping’s White House summit with everything it wanted. But the Chinese leader may have got something bigger: an America increasingly prepared to live with the rise of the world’s only other superpower.

While the three-day state visit produced little real progress on trade and artificial intelligence, and no grand bargain over the economic and military rivalry that has defined relations between the two, it did transmit a carefully cultivated sense that, for now at least, the vibes between Washington and Beijing are good.
