Strong winds warning for Cornwall and coastal Devon

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds for parts of the south and south-west of England until 21:00 BST.

The warning covers Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, English Channel coastal districts and the Isle of Wight, reaching Sussex by mid-afternoon.

The Met Office said gusts of 45 to 50mph are likely and could reach 55mph in exposed areas.

It added delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport were possible, and there was a risk of power outages and damage to temporary structures.

BBC South West broadcast meteorologist Linda Ludlow said an area of low pressure sweeping across the region was bringing "unseasonable June weather with persistent rain and strong winds".

"Our peak recorded gust so far this morning as the occlusion went through was 51mph on the Isles of Scilly," she said.

"The associated heavy and persistent rain will sweep east for the rest of the morning.

"Brightening up in the far west with sunny spells and will clear Devon by mid-afternoon with the wind becoming more westerly, fresh to strong, by late afternoon.

"It will be less windy overnight, but still a breezy but drier and brighter day tomorrow with cloudy skies."

The final day of the Royal Cornwall Show was cancelled due to the strong winds.

Elsewhere, the Tunes in Dunes festival in Perranporth continued under "a revised running order" after parts of the campsite were affected.

Organisers said an emergency welfare shelter was opened, while its teams worked to get "everything safe, secure, and back to normal".
