South Bend native has movie coming out this weekend. Where to see it.

South Bend native Vivica A. Fox has a new movie coming out this week with screenings beginning Thursday afternoon at theaters in both South Bend and Mishawaka.

Fox was born in South Bend and later graduated from Arlington High School in Indianapolis.

Fox has had a prolific acting career, appearing in more than 250 films and TV shows, beginning with four episodes of "Days of Our Lives" in 1988 before she broke out into wider success in 1996's "Independence Day," in which she played Will Smith's wife.

Other well-known projects have included "Soul Food" in 1997, both "Kill Bill" movies in 2003 and 2004, "Ella Enchanted" in 2004, and two roles revisited later.

In 2016, Fox returned for the sequel "Independence Day: Resurgence," and in 2023, she was featured in the music video for SZA's hit "Kill Bill."

Fox's new project is the titular role in "Is God Is," a revenge thriller written and directed by Aleshea Harris, based on her play. The play won several awards, including three Obie Awards given to off-Broadway productions, and was a finalist for a Pulitzer.

Fox plays a mother who sends her twin daughters on a mission of revenge against their father, who set the fire that scarred all three women.

The film runs 1 hour, 39 minutes and is rated R for strong/bloody violence and language.

"Is God Is" has screenings scheduled beginning Thursday at AMC Classic South Bend 16 (450 W. Chippewa Ave., South Bend) and Cinemark South Bend Movies 14 (910 W. Edison Road, Mishawaka).

"Is God Is" sat at 95% positive reviews as of May 12 on Rotten Tomatoes.

And handful of comments from critics:

"Aleshea Harris has announced herself as one of the most important filmmaking voices of her generation. This is not a debut. This is a declaration." — Kathia Woods, Philadelphia Tribune

"Both wildly entertaining and viciously upsetting, this remarkable debut boldly reaps what others have sown." — Guy Lodge, Variety

"So emotionally, dramatically, philosophically complex that it’s tempting to put on professorial airs and focus entirely on its depth. But it is also, just as importantly, electrifying to watch." — William Bibbiani, TheWrap

"Is God Is is forging a really unique path in trying to mine the layers of how the audience thinks about violence both within artistic entertainment fiction but also in real life." — Lady Jenevia, YouTube reviewer

"Is God Is feels like a twisted fever dream that’s modern, vintage, chaotic, and sobering with an ending that will lodge itself in your brain for days after you leave the theater." — Tai Gooden, Nerdist
