A selection of Victoria’s downtown streets will be closed to drivers on July 1 as the city celebrates Canada Day.

Victoria Police said the 500 block of Belleville Street between Menzies and Government streets will close to vehicle traffic around 6 a.m.

Depending on the size of the Canada Day crowd, Government Street between Wharf and Superior streets will be blocked off, while Belleville Street could close between Douglas and Government streets.

Government Street between Johnson and Wharf streets will also be closed to traffic in the evening, and Wharf Street between Johnson and Government streets will shut to motorists at the same time.

Songhees Road is slated for an evening closure.

Victoria Police officers and reserve constables will be managing the road closures and public safety efforts as large crowds are anticipated around the Inner Harbour.

“We thank people for their patience in advance, as our officers work to manage road closures depending on congestion and crowd size,” the police department said in a news release.

Festivities begin at Ship Point at 11 a.m. Larger crowds are anticipated in the evening once programming at the Legislature stage is underway at 4:30 p.m. Fireworks will close out the celebration at 10:20 p.m.

This year’s event is smaller in design and features local performers, food trucks, cultural activities and fireworks. People are encouraged to walk, cycle or take public transit where possible.
