Rapist thought he was 'immune from consequences'

A man has been jailed after admitting to the rape and coercive control of a woman in Stafford.

Kamljit Sahota, 48, initially denied the offences but changed his plea after evidence from the woman was presented in court.

Staffordshire Police said the offences took place between July and October 2025, with the rapist believing he would be "immune from the consequences".

Sahota, from Cannock, was jailed for 10 years and two months at Stafford Crown Court.

He admitted to two counts of rape, engaging in coercive and controlling behaviour, and making threats to destroy or damage property.

Alongside his prison sentence, he was ordered to check in with police indefinitely after his release and made subject to an ongoing restraining order, as well as being ordered to pay a surcharge of £228.

Speaking after the sentencing on Friday, Det Con Andrea Chidgey said Sahota "deliberately" inflicted harm on the victim, and thought he would not face punishment.

She said: "Sahota deliberately and callously intimidated and overpowered every aspect of the survivor's life.

"I'd like to commend the survivor in this case who showed exceptional courage in coming forward and trusting us with her disclosures on what she went through.

"I hope she is able to continue her journey to recovery, and hope this case shows how we are determined to support survivors of abuse and bring perpetrators to justice."
