Public warned as moorland fire clean

Firefighters in Derbyshire are continuing their efforts to tackle a major moorland blaze.

Crews were first called out to Tintwistle Moor, near Glossop, on 24 June, with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service declaring a major incident on 13 July.

The fire remains classified as a major incident, a statement said, with crews "maintaining a significant presence as work continues to contain the fire and reduce the risk of re-ignition".

The A628 remains closed while firefighters and other emergency services deal with the incident, and members of the public are being urged to "remain vigilant and help reduce the risk of wildfires" as the summer holidays begin.

The fire service said it was continuing to work at Arnfield Moor, Crowden, Didsbury Intake and Featherbed Moss.

Efforts to bring the area under control "continue to make progress", it said, adding the "challenging terrain and deep-burning peat continue to present difficulties".

"Crews [are] continuing to strengthen containment measures through the creation and maintenance of fire breaks, trenches and hose systems," the statement said.

"These measures are helping to prevent further fire spread and support efforts to extinguish deep-seated hotspots across the affected area."
