Prashant Kishor Wins First Election in Bankipur: Here's What Happened

Political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor has won the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, securing the first electoral victory of his political career.

Contesting as the Jan Suraaj Party candidate, Kishor defeated BJP's Neeraj Kumar Sinha. According to the election results, Kishor secured more than 63,000 votes, while Sinha received over 44,000 votes. The contest also featured RJD candidate Rekha Gupta.

The victory is also the first election won by the Jan Suraaj Party since its formation.

Why was the Bankipur bypoll held?

The Bankipur Assembly bypoll was conducted after BJP leader Nitin Nabin vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Located in Patna, the Bankipur constituency had been represented by the BJP since 1995 before this bypoll. Nitin Nabin had represented the seat for multiple consecutive terms before moving to the Upper House of Parliament.

Prashant Kishor is an Indian political strategist who later entered active politics. Before launching his own political party, he was widely known for designing and managing election campaigns for several political parties and leaders across the country.

He first came into the national spotlight during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when he was associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's election campaign. Over the following years, he worked with leaders and parties across the political spectrum, including the Janata Dal (United), the Trinamool Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party, the YSR Congress Party and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), among others.

In 2022, Kishor launched the Jan Suraaj campaign, a statewide outreach initiative in Bihar aimed at engaging with voters across the state. The campaign later evolved into the Jan Suraaj Party, which was formally launched in 2024.

The party contested the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections but did not win any seats. Following the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, Kishor continued leading the Jan Suraaj Party before announcing that he would contest the Bankipur Assembly bypoll.

The Bankipur bypoll marked the first election contested by Prashant Kishor as a candidate. His victory in the constituency is the first electoral win of both his political career and the Jan Suraaj Party since its formation.
