Potential thunderstorm forecast for Monday afternoon, bringing damaging wind, large hail and torrential rain

Wind gusts could reach up to 110 km/h

Environment Canada has issued a yellow severe thunderstorm watch for the London area, saying the weather could take a turn starting in the afternoon and going into the evening.

Hazards include winds gusting between 90 to 110 kilometres per hour, local rainfall amounts exceeding 50 millimetres, and quarter to ping pong ball-sized hail.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain," said Environment Canada.

The storms will begin over Lake Huron and continue to move southeastwards. A yellow-band warning from Environment Canada indicates weather that may cause damage, disruption or health impacts that are moderate, localized and/or short term.

Local utility outages are possible if the storm passes through. Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is also possible. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.

Emergency management Ontario recommends residents take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Residents are advised to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
