Police investigating attempted murder of two officers

Police are appealing for information after the attempted murder of two police officers in South Lanarkshire on Saturday.

They had been carrying out inquiries at a property on Glen Avenue in Larkhall at about 14:10 when a white Renault Traffic van was deliberately driven at them.

The two male officers, aged 43 and 41, were taken to hospital with serious injuries. One has been released while the other remains in hospital.

Police Scotland described the incident as "deliberate and despicable" and are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

Police said there were no reports of any other injuries, and the van was later recovered in Kirkstyle Place, Glassford.

The suspect is described as a white male, 6ft tall, wearing dark shorts, a grey jumper and a beige baseball cap.

Ch Insp Paul Doyle said violence was not "part of the job for police officers" and that it "will not be tolerated".

"I would like to reassure the community that we are working to trace the person responsible and will continue to carry out inquiries in the local area," he said.

"We are speaking to members of the public and there will be additional patrols in the area, and would encourage anyone with any information or concerns to speak to officers."

He added that his thoughts were with the "officers, their families and colleagues" and that they would be given "all the necessary support."
