Seven students from Embetsu, Japan toured Castlegar this month as part of the 28-year-old sister city relationship between Embetsu and Castlegar.
A key feature of that relationship is the Embetsu Student Exchange Program that sees Castlegar students visit Japan and Embetsu students visit Castlegar on alternating years.
It is supported by the Shikano Fund, established in 1998 by Mitsuo Shikano, a Japanese businessman born in Embetsu. The fund partially subsidizes the travel expenses of participating students.
During a visit to Castlegar, Shikano developed a deep appreciation for the community – an experience that eventually led to the formation of the sister-city relationship.
Shikano’s vision was to strengthen goodwill and mutual respect among young people.
The Embetsu students were hosted by local families including the eight Castlegar students that will visit Embetsu next year.
The group met Castlegar officials, toured key locations such as City Hall, Castlegar Council Chambers, the fire station and the RCMP station. They also enjoyed fun activities and outings.
Castlegar students in grades 5-7 can apply to become part of the program when the next intake cycle opens. More information is available at castlegarembetsu.com.
