D.P. Murphy Group founder recognized for contributions to business and communities

Prince Edward Island entrepreneur Danny Murphy has been named a member of the Order of Canada, the province's only recipient among this year's appointments.

Murphy founded the D.P. Murphy Group of Companies in 1980 with the opening of two Tim Hortons restaurants.

Since then, he has grown the business into one of Atlantic Canada's largest hospitality companies with a portfolio that includes several well-known brands, according to the company’s website.

"A leading Prince Edward Island entrepreneur, Danny Murphy built D. P. Murphy Group into a major hospitality enterprise while advancing regional tourism and employment," reads a citation on the Governor General of Canada's website.

"A dedicated philanthropist, he strengthened disability services, revitalized Oak Acres Children's Camp, and supported health care and Alzheimer's initiatives, profoundly enhancing community well-being across the Maritime provinces."

Murphy is one of 56 Canadians appointed this year to what is considered the country's highest civilian honour.

The Order of Canada is meant to recognize people who make "extraordinary contributions to the nation," the website reads.

Murphy and the other new appointees will be invited to a future investiture ceremony where they will receive their insignia.
