Out of the blue: Hockey India's decision to replace the blue jersey with a saffron sparks debate on Identity & Politics
When you picture the India hockey team walking onto the field, one thing that comes to mind is the colour blue, followed by a sense of pride it invokes in millions of Indians. It is a colour woven into memories of victories, heartbreaks and the enduring legacy of a sport that once defined India’s place on the world stage. So when news about that familiar blue being replaced with saffron for the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup (August 15-30) was announced, the conversation quickly moved beyond aesthetics to a national debate on symbolism, identity and the place of politics in sport today.
Following the stirred-up debate that divided netizens, Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey also said the federation’s office-bearers were informed of the jersey change only a little over two hours before its public unveiling, raising questions beyond the colour to the powerplay and the transparency of the decision-making process behind it. As opinions remain divided, CE asks Bengalureans, including prominent hockey players: does the colour of a jersey really matter, or are we reading too much into it? Where should sport draw the line between identity, symbolism and politics?
