OpenAI Acquires AI Presentation Startup NextSlide to Bolster ChatGPT's Visual Tools
OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, an artificial intelligence startup specializing in automated presentation creation, a move that signals the company's intention to push ChatGPT deeper into the visual communication and productivity market. The deal, which took place earlier this year but was only publicly confirmed on August 8, 2026, sees the NextSlide team absorbed into OpenAI's workforce to directly contribute to ChatGPT's development.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. NextSlide founder Ahmed Beshry confirmed the acquisition in a statement on the company's website and in a LinkedIn post, noting that the announcement was coming "a few months late" given the deal had already closed. "We're joining OpenAI," Beshry wrote, adding that his team is now working on ChatGPT.
NextSlide developed a platform designed to transform user prompts, notes, documents, or research materials into polished, editable presentations. The core mission, according to Beshry, was "to make visual communication more accessible and help more people express their ideas clearly." By integrating with OpenAI, the team intends to "continue pursuing that same mission: building AI products that help people create, communicate, and turn their ideas into meaningful work."
Beshry is a serial entrepreneur with a track record of building AI-driven startups that attract major acquirers. He previously co-founded Caper AI, a company focused on smart shopping carts and cashier-less checkout technology. Instacart acquired Caper AI in 2021, providing a blueprint for a founder-led exit to a larger platform seeking to enhance its technological capabilities.
The acquisition is a clear indicator of OpenAI's ambition to evolve ChatGPT beyond a text-based conversational agent into a multimodal productivity suite. By embedding presentation-generation capabilities directly into ChatGPT, OpenAI could streamline workflows for millions of professionals who currently toggle between drafting text in a chatbot and designing slides in separate software. The integration is expected to allow users to generate not only the written content for a presentation but also its visual structure and design, all within a single interface. This positions ChatGPT to compete more directly with entrenched productivity tools, including Microsoft PowerPoint's AI-powered Designer and Copilot features, as well as specialized presentation platforms like Gamma and Tome.
