Officer in hospital after being shot during ‘exchange of gunfire’: Toronto police

A Toronto police officer is in hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries after being shot during an “exchange of gunfire” early Thursday morning.

The force said in a post on X that at 5:42 a.m., police were conducting a search warrant near Trethewey and Black Creek drives, when gunshots rang out.

An officer was shot, and they were taken to hospital in an emergency run.

A spokesperson for Toronto paramedics told Global News two people were taken to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition.

The Special Investigations Unit, Ontario’s police watchdog, said the second individual is a man. It is also investigating the incident.

No suspect information was made available.

A heavy police presence was witnessed by Global News at 15 Martha Eaton Way, an apartment building near the intersection. Officers were also at Sunnybrook Hospital, where the entrance to the emergency area was taped off.

Some building residents said they were shaken by what happened.

“It’s not the first time: last year a little boy got shot.”

That little boy was eight-year-old JahVai Roy, who was killed when stray bullets entered his bedroom on Aug. 16, 2025. He was lying in bed with his mother when shots rang out outside his home around 12:30 a.m.

Three teenagers were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in that case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
