NSIA Launches $275,000 Innovation Prize To Fund Nigerian Startups, Unlocks $1.5m Growth Financing

Managing Director/Chief Executive, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), Aminu Umar-Sadiq, said it is committed to strengthening entrepreneurship development by expanding funding, mentorship and business support opportunities for innovative Nigerian startups through the fourth edition of the NSIA Prize for Innovation (NPI 4.0).

He spoke while announcing the commencement of applications for the NPI 4.0 for 2026, offering a combined prize pool of $275,000, comprising $220,000 from the NSIA, $45,000 from Cascador and $10,000 from Wema Bank.

Umar-Sadiq said the enhanced programme was designed to help promising entrepreneurs transform innovative ideas into sustainable businesses capable of driving economic growth, creating jobs and addressing some of the country’s most pressing development challenges.

In a statement by NSIA spokesperson, Joyce Onyegbula, he said entrepreneurs across the country were already developing solutions with the capacity to transform industries and improve livelihoods.

He said, “Across Nigeria, entrepreneurs are building solutions with the potential to transform industries, improve livelihoods, and address some of our most pressing development challenges.

“Through the NSIA Prize for Innovation, we are creating opportunities for these innovators to access the funding, training, mentorship, and strategic partnerships they need to scale their ideas into sustainable businesses.

“The enhancements introduced in NPI 4.0 reflect our continued commitment to support founders who are leveraging innovation to shape the future of Nigeria’s economy.”

The fully-funded entrepreneurship programme, themed “Building for Impact,” will focus on startups operating in manufacturing, climate and food security, as well as healthcare.

Beyond the cash prizes, participants will have access to entrepreneurial training, mentorship, investor engagement, strategic partnerships and business development support designed to help startups scale their operations.

One of the major highlights of the programme is the opportunity for winners to secure up to $1.5 million in funding through the Pula Xcelerator to accelerate business expansion and strengthen operations.

Successful participants will also qualify to compete at the grand finale of the Wema Bank Hackaholics programme for a share of N100 million in equity-free grants.

In addition, winners will undergo a fully-funded executive entrepreneurship programme at the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC), Lagos, where they will receive training in business strategy, corporate governance, financial management, market expansion and investor readiness.

Umar-Sadiq pointed out that the programme had over the past three editions, supported startups developing innovative solutions across financial inclusion, agriculture, education, technology and sustainable development.

He said the combination of funding, technical assistance, mentorship and access to strategic networks had enabled participating businesses to strengthen their business models, expand operations and increase their economic and social impact.

He said, “Entrepreneurs developing innovative technologies, products, and solutions that address critical challenges in these sectors are encouraged to apply and become part of a growing community of innovators shaping the future of Nigeria.”

The NSIA boss urged founders developing innovative technologies, products and services in the targeted sectors to take advantage of the opportunity, describing NPI 4.0 as more than a competition but a comprehensive platform for enterprise growth.

Also commenting, Executive Director of Cascador, Trish Thomas, said the organisation was committing $45,000 in non-dilutive funding under the Cascador Prize for Impact to support innovative Nigerian ventures capable of delivering measurable social impact.

She said the organisation was pleased to partner with the NSIA once again to reward groundbreaking ideas capable of transforming communities and improving lives.
