Nikkei 225 posts 3rd-largest point drop
Tokyo's benchmark stock index tumbled on Thursday, posting its third-largest point decline on record at the close.
Worries over AI and chip shares triggered a broad market selloff.
The Nikkei 225 finished at 64,425, down 3,318 points or 4.9 percent.
Analysts say investors moved to offload risk in the morning session, selling AI and semiconductor stocks.
They were spooked by concerns about funding for a cloud computing company.
This fueled uncertainty across the AI and chip industries.
There was a bright spot in the afternoon session as major contract chipmaker TSMC announced growing profits.
But the news wasn't enough to offset the index's large drop.
