News Corp boss slams government’s proposed changes to big tech tax
News Corp executive chairman Michael Miller says the Albanese government’s final proposal to tax the world’s largest technology giants has watered down the point of the scheme, and will damage the quality of journalism and independence of the country’s news publishers.
Labor has narrowed a proposed tax on tech companies such as Google and Meta under its long-awaited News Bargaining Incentive, limiting it to a proportion of revenue made from digital advertising. This levy – 2.5 per cent – only applies to digital advertising revenue of more than $250 million per annum for tech companies that refuse to do deals with news publishers.
