Netflix’s #1 Movie Has Viewers Torn, But Everyone’s Calling Out This One Detail

By now, it’s hardly shocking when a new movie rockets to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts shortly after its release. It happens pretty much like clockwork every week. What is a little more surprising, though, is when that number one movie leaves viewers seriously torn over whether they loved it or couldn’t stand it. We’ve seen it happen before with Will Ferrell-led The Hawk and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, and now Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again? is getting the same treatment.

The film, the third installment in the Why Did I Get Married? franchise, arrived on Netflix on September 9 and was already sitting at the coveted number one spot the following day. Clearly, people are watching. But when it comes to whether they’re actually enjoying it, well, that’s where things get a little complicated.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer wrote, "They should have left it at Why Did I get Married Too !!! This film was a horrible watch!!!"

Another viewer on X chimed in, "I tried watching Why Did I Get Married Again and turned that shit off not even 30 minutes in."

But on the flip side, plenty of viewers are genuinely into it.

"This was a great feel good about ourselves movie," one RT commenter wrote. Another shared, "I thoroughly enjoyed Why Did I Get Married Again."

There is, however, one thing viewers on both sides seem to agree on: Janet Jackson’s absence. In the first two films Janet played Dr. Patricia Agnew, a psychologist, part of the core group of college friends who gather to work on the struggles and strengths of their marriages.

"Janet Jackson not being in this movie certainly changed the dynamic and felt like a different movie," one person said. Another noted, "Although, I missed Janet Jackson’s character, the way Taraji’s character got added made sense to me."

Set nearly two decades after the original films, Why Did I Get Married Again? brings the core group of friends together for a lavish destination wedding in Lake Como, Italy. As they reconnect, they realize their adult children are repeating many of the same relationship patterns and idealized views of marriage they once had.

Most of the original cast returns, including Tyler Perry, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Jill Scott, Lamman Rucker and Richard T. Jones, alongside new familiar faces like Taraji P. Henson.

Why Did I Get Married Again? is streaming now on Netflix.
