Multiple artificial intelligence services went down Thursday, putting a kibosh on people’s workday or leisure use of the programs.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot that helps answer people’s questions, went out of service Thursday morning as thousands of users reported problems accessing the program.
According to Downdetector.com, issues with ChatGPT were first identified around 10:30 a.m. EDT, and less than two hours later, more than 87,000 reports were submitted.
“It literally crashed on me while i was trying to write an email,” Allie Hunter commented on the platform that tracks outages for web services.
One said their projects were not loading while another complained that they can open the program but couldn’t sign in.
“It seems like ChatGPT has had issues all week,” another wrote. “What’s up with that?”
The company said on its status page that there were issues with elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex.
“We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery,” a company rep said about 30 minutes into the outage.
During the noon hour, users began reporting ChatGPT was working for them again.
“Regained access … job is safe again,” one user said.
OpenAI has not explained what caused the outage for many of its users.
Meanwhile, users also reported problems with other AI services on Thursday, including Anthropic’s Claude, Google Gemini, and social platform X’s Grok.
On Claude’s status page, the company said there were elevated errors for multiple models and the issue has been resolved.
Meanwhile, Gemini users reported receiving error codes beginning at 9 a.m., but the issue was eventually resolved.
On X, Elon Musk’s social platform reported a models outage for Grok at 9:30 a.m.
“Grok is experiencing issues. We are working on restoring service as quickly as possible,” the company said on its status page.
Shortly after 1 p.m., an X tech rep said the situation has been resolved and “traffic is healthy again.”
