Mozambique Launches AI Association to Drive National Technology Ecosystem

The association is expected to bring together government institutions, private companies, universities, researchers, technology professionals, entrepreneurs and civil society to support the development and adoption of AI solutions suited to Mozambique’s needs.

Mozambique has established a new industry association focused on advancing artificial intelligence, with the Mozambican Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA) officially launched in Maputo.

The launch, which was opened by Lourino Chemane, Chairman of the Board of the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC), also saw the swearing-in of members of AMIA’s leadership bodies.

The initiative comes as artificial intelligence gains relevance across sectors including agriculture, healthcare, education, banking, manufacturing, commerce and public administration. For Mozambique, the technology is increasingly being viewed as a tool for improving public service delivery, encouraging innovation and creating new economic opportunities, particularly for young people.

INTIC said the creation of AMIA reflects the growing pool of professionals, academics, researchers and young innovators in Mozambique with the capacity to contribute to the country’s emerging AI ecosystem.

The government is also developing policy frameworks to guide the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence. INTIC is coordinating the preparation of a proposed National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which is expected to provide direction for AI development and deployment across the country.

Alongside the AI strategy, Mozambique is working on a proposed National Data Governance Policy and Strategy, highlighting the importance of reliable data governance to the development and responsible use of AI technologies.

The Commercial and Investment Bank (BCI) has also expressed support for initiatives aimed at using technology to generate economic and social value. The bank sees AMIA as a potential platform for knowledge development, investment and building greater confidence in AI applications.

The launch of AMIA marks another step in Mozambique’s efforts to establish the institutional and policy foundations needed to participate in the growing regional and global AI economy.
