Motorcyclist killed in Calgary crash was travelling more than 200 km/h, police say

Death is city's 23rd traffic fatality this year

Calgary police are investigating speed as a factor after a motorcyclist died in a single-vehicle collision Wednesday evening.

At approximately 7:50 p.m., the 39-year-old man was travelling east on McKnight Boulevard approaching Métis Trail N.E., police said in a news release on Thursday.

Police said evidence collected at the scene suggests the driver was travelling "in excess" of 200 kilometres an hour when he lost control of the motorcycle and was thrown from it, landing in a median between the Métis Trail off-ramp and McKnight Boulevard N.E.

The driver later died in hospital.

Impairment is not believed to have been a factor, the release said.

There have been 23 traffic fatalities in Calgary so far this year.

Last year, the city recorded 38 fatal collisions.
