Man killed by police after gun incident involving woman, baby in Edmonton home

Suspect male, injured parties were known to one another, police say

Alberta's police watchdog is investigating after police officers shot and killed a man armed with a firearm Sunday, following reports of shooting in a west Edmonton home involving a woman and an infant.

The Edmonton Police Service said in a news release that officers responded to a residence in the area of Donsdale Drive and 45th Avenue Sunday morning where it had been reported that a man with a firearm entered the home and shot a woman and infant inside.

According to police, when officers arrived at the scene they were "met by witnesses and the injured parties and immediately began establishing containment of the residence."

The 36-year-old man then opened the front door armed with a gun and when he did not comply with verbal direction, three officers discharged their firearms, EPS said.

On Monday, police confirmed in an email to CBC News that a woman suffered a gunshot wound and "the infant presented with other physical injuries."

The EPS tactical emergency medical support team attempted life-saving measures on the 36-year-old man but he died at the scene, police said.

Police said Monday the suspect male and the injured parties were known to each other and "this event is believed to be a domestic violence-related incident."

Injuries to the woman and infant are believed to be non-threatening, police said. No police officers were injured.

The Police Review Commission was notified about the incident and has since directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate.
