Man dies after being struck by vehicle following large fight in North York: police

Police were called to the scene for reports of a large group fighting early Sunday morning

A man is dead after being struck by a driver in a vehicle following a large fight in North York Sunday morning. Toronto police say they're investigating the incident as homicide.

Officers responded to reports of a group fighting in the area around 6 a.m. near Keele Street and Wilson Avenue area, said Toronto police on social media.

At the scene, police said they found one person who had been struck by a driver in a vehicle. That man was later pronounced dead.

The brawl broke out after an argument in the area, Duty Insp. Scott Bradbury said at a news conference at the scene.

Another person was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said on social media.

Superintendent Jack Gurr said more than one person was involved in the fight and that police are speaking to witnesses. He urged anyone involved in the incident to turn themselves in to police.

"It's not going to be long until you're discovered," he said, adding the neighbourhood is "very quiet" and that it's unusual to have these sorts of issues.

"It's important to acknowledge the amount of distress this [incident] will cause our residents."

A light coloured vehicle was seen fleeing the scene, but investigators do not have suspect descriptions at this time, police said.

Residents may notice an increased police presence in the area as investigators actively look into the case, Bradbury said.

There is no risk to the public as investigators believe the incident is "localized," he said.

Bradbury urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
