Man dead, 2nd man critically injured after being shot in Scarborough, police say

Victims found north and south of Victoria Park Avenue and Highway 401

One man is dead and another man has life-threatening injuries after both were shot in Scarborough on Monday afternoon, police say.

The men were found in two different locations, Toronto police say.

The man who died was found on Terraview Boulevard near Victoria Park Avenue, south of Highway 401, and the man who was injured was found on Victoria Park Avenue and Esquire Road, near Sheppard Avenue E., north of Highway 401.

In an email on Monday night, Const. Shannon Eames said police do not know the exact location where the men were shot and could not say if there was one or two shootings.

Duty Insp. Jonathan Rose, spokesperson for the police, told reporters police were called to Victoria Park Avenue and Highway 401 for a report of unknown trouble shortly before 3:20 p.m. Police were told a man was found with a gunshot wound.

Officers arrived a short time later and found a man without vital signs. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and is the city's 17th homicide victim of the year.

A short time later, at about 3:20 p.m., police responded to a shooting call at the second scene after a bystander found an injured man and called 911, he said.

Officers found the man suffering from gunshot wounds and he was rushed to hospital.

Incidents are connected, police say

Rose said the incidents are connected but he could not say if the men shot each other. Police are speaking to witnesses and canvassing residential areas near both scenes for security camera footage.

"Please know that we are dedicating all necessary resources to this investigation and residents can expect to see an increased police presence here and also at the other scene," Rose said.

Rose said police have no evidence to suggest that the incidents pose a threat to the public.

'Very disturbing,' local resident says

A son and mother, who live in a highrise building near Terraview Boulevard, said they saw the aftermath of the shooting. CBC News has agreed not to name them over concerns for their safety.

The son, 16, said he was playing video games when he heard something.

"I look out my window because we live right there. I just see a dude in orange sprawled out on the pavement. I left my room to go tell my mom. Then I came back and I see a whole other dude with blood coming out of his head. So yeah, just very sad," he said.

The man in orange was taken to the ambulance, he said. His mother then looked out the window.

"I was extremely disturbed," she said. "I was crying. Literally, my hands were shaking. I couldn't even believe what I was looking at. I came home from work and my son's telling me to look out our bedroom window and I would never think that I'd see that today.

"It's very disturbing because spiritually that's somebody's family member. One minute, you know, they were here, next minute, they're gone."

Police said their homicide unit has been notified.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact police.
