Lawrence Bishnoi Runs Global Crime Gang from Jail, Targets Diaspora: US Indictment
Jailed Gangster Ran Extortion, Murder Syndicate from Indian Prison
Washington (IANS): US federal prosecutors have alleged that jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi runs a sprawling, international criminal enterprise straight from his Indian prison cell. Utilizing smuggled contraband mobile phones and internet-based communication, Bishnoi has allegedly masterminded murders, political assassinations, extortion, and drug trafficking across several countries.
The shocking revelations emerged on Tuesday after US authorities unsealed a federal racketeering indictment under ‘Operation Hard Ball’—a massive multinational crackdown targeting three major organized crime groups operating across North America, Europe, and Asia.
From Campus Politics to Transnational Crime
According to the unsealed indictment, Bishnoi transformed a simple student network in Punjab into a multi-continent syndicate after abandoning campus politics in the early 2010s.
“While enrolled in university… defendant BISHNOI styled himself as a student leader and developed a network of associates… Defendant BISHNOI soon thereafter traded campus politics for criminal activity, and refashioned his associates and followers into a criminal organisation,” the indictment states.
Despite Indian authorities arresting him in 2015, US prosecutors allege Bishnoi never lost control. He used voice-over-IP (VoIP) devices and smuggled cell phones to direct global operations, expanding the network into the US, Canada, the UK, Europe, and Australia. The syndicate now boasts thousands of members, including hundreds operating directly within the United States and Canada.
How the Gang Recruits and Operates
To fuel his enterprise, Bishnoi carefully engineered a public persona, projecting an image of himself as a “patriot,” “nationalist,” and “deeply religious individual.” He used social media platforms and media interviews to actively recruit followers.
Investigators reveal the syndicate used specific tactics to maintain power:
Operation Hard Ball: Gangs Targeted Indian Diaspora Across North America
The US Justice Department announced that these India-based organized crime groups intentionally targeted the Indian diaspora across North America through murder, extortion, and intimidation.
‘Operation Hard Ball’ has charged 37 defendants linked to three transnational criminal organizations. Thus far, multinational law enforcement agencies have arrested 24 suspects.
“These criminal organisations have engaged in widespread violence, including targeted killings, extortions, and kidnappings,” First Assistant US Attorney Bilal A. Essayli announced in Los Angeles. “They targetted in particular on communities in the United States and Canada with ties to India.”
High-Profile Targets: H.S.N., R.G., S.S.S., and S.K.
The indictment reveals that the Bishnoi group targeted high-profile cultural, political, and business leaders to maximize publicity and create a “climate of fear,” which they later exploited for multi-million-dollar extortion schemes.
The court documents tie the gang to several sensational cases:
The syndicate identified wealthy diaspora targets using government databases, social media tracking, and physical surveillance. Gang members then contacted victims via encrypted apps like WhatsApp, demanding massive payouts while citing their previous high-profile hits to enforce compliance. Profits were then funnelled back to network members in India.
A separate indictment also targets the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria organized crime group. Prosecutors allege this rival gang similarly extorted the Indian diaspora, occasionally conspiring with corrupt law enforcement officials in India to frame victims in false criminal cases before demanding bribe money to drop the charges.
