Lai urges advanced technology development to keep Taiwan competitive

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Monday called for continued investment in advanced technology to strengthen Taiwan’s industries and national resilience, CNA reported.

Speaking at the 15th Industrial Technology Research Institute Laureate Ceremony, Lai said Taiwan faces major challenges from artificial intelligence, the shift to net-zero emissions, and changes in global supply chains. He said the country must move faster to remain competitive.

Lai said the government is promoting five strategic industries and 10 major AI infrastructure projects. He urged the institute to continue developing advanced technologies and helping companies adopt them.

Taiwan’s economic strength was built over decades, Lai said, with the research institute playing an important role in the country’s industrial development. He highlighted Taiwan’s strengths in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, information and communications technology, and electronic components.

Lai also called for closer cooperation among companies, universities, research organizations, and startups. He said the institute’s fellows should mentor younger researchers and use their international connections to deepen Taiwan’s cooperation with democratic partners.

He said continued innovation and cooperation would strengthen Taiwan’s industries, make its supply chains more resilient, and reinforce the country’s role as a trusted partner in the global economy.
