Kylian Mbappé sets a World Cup record with his 9th and 10th knockout round goals against Sweden

As he chases Lionel Messi for the all-time scoring record at the World Cup, Kylian Mbappé secured a record that Messi doesn't have on Tuesday against Sweden.

Mbappé's first-half goal was his ninth in the knockout round at the World Cup. That broke a three-way tie with Brazil players Leônidas and Ronaldo for the most in elimination games.

Here's how Mbappé set the record just before halftime:

He added to it in the second half to officially put the game out of reach. With France up 2-0 and Sweden not providing any threat, Mbappé made the lead three.

The first goal was Mbappé's 17th overall in the World Cup and broke a tie with Germany's Miroslav Klose for the second-most of all time. Klose entered the 2026 World Cup as the record holder for most career goals in the tournament, but he was quickly passed by Messi after his hat trick in Argentina's first game against Algeria and a brace against Austria.

Messi added another goal to his total in Argentina's group stage finale against Jordan and currently sits one goal ahead of Mbappé with 19. Both players have scored six goals at the 2026 World Cup and are tied for the lead in the Golden Boot race.

Mbappé scored five goals in the knockout rounds of the 2022 World Cup. He had a hat trick in the final against Argentina after scoring twice in France's Round of 16 win over Poland. In 2018, as France won the World Cup, Mbappé scored twice against Argentina in a Round of 16 win before adding a goal in a 4-2 win over Croatia in the final.
