IRyS 1st Concert “HOPE ||: Beyond the Stars”
IRyS 1st Concert “HOPE ||: Beyond the Stars”
IRyS, a member of hololive -Promise- who embodies hope as a Nephilim, has continued to captivate audiences with her crystal-clear yet powerful vocals, performing a wide range of music spanning Eurobeat, rock, pop, and ballads. On October 6, she held her first solo concert, IRyS 1st Concert “HOPE ||: Beyond the Stars,” at SGC HALL ARIAKE in Tokyo.
Since her debut in 2021, IRyS has released numerous original songs and has supported hololive’s music activities. “HOPE,” featured in the concert’s title, is one of the words that define her. The show felt like a culmination of her journey so far of bringing hope to others through music.
At the beginning of the show, a series of messages addressed to the audience appeared on the screen: “Should there be a spell that could grant my wishes,” “It would be you.” “I will gift you with” and “Hope made of miracles.” A countdown then appeared against a screen resembling TV color bars, followed by IRyS’s silhouette. The concert’s key visual was revealed alongside the message, “Our journey towards Hope begins,” and the show kicked off amid thunderous cheers.
With a live band on either side of the stage, IRyS made her entrance alongside dancers, dressed in a race queen outfit and carrying a flag. The opening set featured a string of trance-inspired tracks, a signature theme of her songs. Colorful lasers rained down from the first song, “BE MY FLAME,” as her powerful vocals instantly drew the audience, their light sticks glowing entirely red, into her world. During “Escalate,” the crowd erupted into rhythmic “Oi! Oi!” chants. Next came “MUSE,” a pop tune blending modern R&B and funk, with pleasantly groovy cutting guitar. During the instrumental break, IRyS introduced the band members, bringing the performers and audience together in an even stronger sense of unity. It was a commanding opening that showcased her ability to dominate the stage as a singer, showing that her appeal goes beyond cuteness and approachability.
M1: BE MY FLAME The mood shifted dramatically as IRyS quickly changed into the white version of her new outfit, which also appears in the concert’s key visual, and performed the ballad “Till the end of me.” She then changed just as swiftly into the black version of the outfit, and performed “Eclipse” and “TwiLight” back-to-back. Keeping the energy high, she called out to the crowd, “Rock! Let’s go! It’s rock time! Let’s hype things up!” before launching into a medley of rock-flavored tracks, including “HERE COMES HOPE,” “BERSERKER,” and “LIVING DEAD.” During “LIVING DEAD,” the backup dancers added extra flair with choreography featuring race queen-style circuit parasols.
M7: IRyS ROCK Medley Next, IRyS switched to a microphone modeled after a magic wand and performed “Gravity (Trance Remix).” As she cast a spell with the wand, the countless TV monitors in the background came crumbling down, and a dazzling orb appeared, completely transforming the onstage atmosphere. From there, she passionately performed the modern R&B track “Why do we stay?” with its trap-flavored melodic phrasing, and “Flower of hope,” which likens hope that will surely come someday to a flower bud. Near the end of “Flower of hope,” a stem grew up from around her feet and bloomed into a flower, and the stage set changed further with an effect synchronized to the lyrics. As the opening video messages had conveyed, the staging seemed to respond not only to her singing but to the energy of the entire live show, including the cheers of the audience. She then sang a medley of two songs from her 2022 EP Quarter Bravery: “Ai no Jikkai” and “ENJOY! JOY!! JOYFUL!!!” The venue grew hotter and hotter.
M8: Gravity (Trance Remix) As the opening stretch of the concert made clear, a defining characteristic of IRyS’s music is its breadth. Her first full-length album, DANGERyS, released ahead of the concert, showcased the diverse musical styles she has cultivated throughout her career, from the Eurobeat sound she has excelled at in recent years to drum-and-bass-inspired digital rock and serene ballads. The same was true of the concert. On upbeat tracks, her soaring high notes and powerful delivery lifted the energy in the venue, while on mid-tempo songs and ballads, she showed such delicate expression that it was hard to believe it was the same voice. With each change of song came a change in vocal expression, once again giving a sense of just how much range IRyS has.
In addition to this musical diversity, another striking aspect of the concert was the many connections IRyS has forged through her activities so far. Over the past five years or so, her journey has brought her into contact with a variety of people, including fellow hololive members and creators. Reflecting these experiences, the concert gradually expanded beyond the “story of IRyS alone” as it progressed. A symbol of this was the appearance of two special guests: Shiranui Flare and MOTSU. The relationships IRyS has built throughout her time with hololive came to fruition on the special stage of her first solo concert.
First, Shiranui Flare appeared onstage to roaring cheers, joining IRyS in a passionate duet of their collaborative song “Stay Blue.” Over the refreshing, driving pop tune, the two besties got the venue fired up with a well-synced mic relay and a staging touch in which they faced each other and pressed their palms together. During the MC, they encouraged the audience to change their light stick colors to pink and orange, representing the two singers, sending the excitement soaring even further. They then performed Flare’s song “angel’s ladder” together. During the intro, the audience joined in with a “La la la la-la la” chorus, and calls arose naturally from the crowd.
M12: Stay Blue Following that, IRyS performed “diorama,” accompanied by lyrics displayed on the screen; “Akatsuki to Hana,” a Japanese-style rock track, during which she sang and danced with a folding fan in hand; and “Because of You,” which she performed while seated on an orb that descended to the stage in the latter half of the song. After “LAST DANCE,” for which she changed back into her race queen outfit, the stage was set for her next performance alongside the other special guest of the evening: MOTSU.
From early on, IRyS has performed songs from the TV anime Initial D, including during her 3D debut stream, and has also incorporated homages to the series into one of her signature tracks, “Carbonated Love.” And the man behind many of the songs in the Initial D series is MOTSU, who is also known for his work with the musical group m.o.v.e.
“I’d like to welcome someone who’s absolutely essential to this song!” IRyS announced as she brought MOTSU onto the stage. MOTSU fired up the crowd, shouting, “Tokyo! Bring it on!” before the two launched into “DIAMOND GIRLFRIEND feat. MOTSU,” a song he had provided for IRyS. His rap and high-energy performance complemented IRyS’s vocals, while billowing smoke and colorful lasers added to an overwhelming surge of excitement. In the song’s closing moments, the entire audience jumped in unison, and the whole venue was filled with the energy of a dance floor. The two then teamed up for a cover of “JUNGLE FIRE feat. MOTSU,” a track from the TV anime MF Ghost, a series in the lineage of Initial D. After a torrent of “IRyS!” calls, a moment came when everyone screamed as one.
M18: DIAMOND GIRLFRIEND feat.MOTSU IRyS went back to performing solo with a medley of three more tracks showcasing her all-out Eurobeat sound: “Unspoken,” “BITE,” and “Run to You.” To close out the main set, she told the audience, “Thank you all so much! Let’s race to the finish together!” before going into “My car is in danger.” During the instrumental break, she used the dancers’ circuit parasols to quick-change into the two new outfits that debuted at the concert. She then reappeared in her race queen-style outfit, drawing huge cheers from the crowd. Keeping her energy at full throttle until the very end, IRyS brought the main set to a spectacular close.
With the audience’s cheers showing no signs of letting up, IRyS happily exclaimed, “Oh, all right, then!” and kicked off the encore. She first got the venue buzzing with “Carbonated Love,” the song that set in motion her trance-to-Eurobeat sound. The mood then shifted completely as she introduced the next song, saying, “I’m able to stand on this stage thanks to all of you. I want to sing this with all my gratitude.” In “One Step at a Time,” she sang her thanks plainly and directly: “Because of you, I feel myself again” and “I am able to start walking toward hope again” (author’s paraphrase).
M22: Carbonated Love During the MC that followed, IRyS switched off her microphone and expressed her gratitude in her own unamplified voice: “Thank you so much!” She then reflected on her journey so far. “I was really, really happy when I got the email saying that I got into hololive. And I thought that that was the happiest moment in my life,” she recalled. “But today, that moment has been surpassed!” she said in Japanese, then added in English, “This is officially the happiest day of my life.” She said this fighting back tears, and with a show that felt like a reflection of her five years, the audience’s emotions kept swelling. The final song of the encore was her debut track, “Caesura of Despair.” Around the middle of the song, she transformed into the original debut outfit for the first time that evening, sending the crowd into even louder cheers. After singing the song through, the tears she had been holding back spilled over, and she said, “Thank you so much!” once more to close the show.
The lyrics of “Caesura of Despair,” the final song of the evening, include the lines “Darkness will fade away, iris will light your way” and “Our journey has only just begun right now.” When IRyS first debuted, the song was simply one about a fresh, untouched beginning. But with time, it has become a song that recalls the starting point of the long journey she has walked with her listeners.
M24: Caesura of Despair In the five years or so since her 2021 debut, IRyS has performed on stages around the world as a member of hololive and sung countless songs. This year, she finally took the stage for her first solo concert, carrying her first full-length album, DANGERyS, with her. For fans who know the road that led here, the sight must have been especially meaningful. After all, from the very start, the journey IRyS sang about was never one she would walk alone, but one she and her listeners would move forward through, hand in hand.
