Iran Open RoboCup brings together 700 teams and around 2,000 young robotics innovators

The 20th Iran Open RoboCup has concluded in Tehran, bringing together hundreds of robotics teams and highlighting Iran’s growing presence in robotics and artificial intelligence.

The competition, which began on September 16 at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla with the support of the Vice Presidency for Science, Technology and Knowledge-Based Economy, drew more than 700 teams and around 2,000 participants.

The five-day event featured competitions across a wide range of disciplines, including robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, aerial robots, rescue systems, service robots, robot soccer, robot design and construction, as well as categories for participants of different age groups.

A special category for elementary school students was introduced for the first time this year, attracting around 130 teams and giving younger participants an opportunity to compete in robotics.

In the autonomous vehicle league, AURIGA claimed first place, followed by ROBOTIX IRAN in second and SADRA ROBOT in third. AURIGA also secured the top position in the service robots in work league.

In the aerial robots league, YRA took first place, while MRL finished second. In the under-18 aerial robots category, Encanto emerged as the winner.

The two-dimensional soccer simulation league saw Cambyses I take first place in the over-18 division, while AITech-2D topped the under-18 category.

Other awards were presented in the innovative technologies and artificial intelligence competitions.

RRL won first place in the product category, while Aria Robotic 11 took the top spot in the ideas category.

Iranian teams have been among the active participants in RoboCup competitions since 2003, with their numbers growing over the years.

This increasing participation led to the launch of the Iran Open RoboCup, which serves as a platform for teams to prepare for the World Championship, exchange experience and provide newer teams with an opportunity to enter the field.

The inaugural Iran Open was held in April 2006, featuring 116 teams competing across seven leagues.

The recent results come as Iranian robotics teams have recorded a series of notable performances at international competitions in recent months.

At the RoboCup 2026 World Championship in Incheon, South Korea, held from June 30 to July 6, Iranian teams competed in six leagues against teams from countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, Croatia, Japan and China.

In the Rescue Line league, an Iranian team received the Best Technical Presentation Award and ranked first in the documentation evaluation.

In Rescue Simulation, Iranian teams won first place in eight field competition rounds, while also securing second place in documentation and the overall team competition.

Iranian teams also advanced to the semi-finals of both the Soccer Vision and Soccer Infrared leagues, finishing fourth overall in each. The country’s OnStage team also placed among the top five.

Iranian teams continued their international run in August at Robotics Challenge 2026 in Beijing, where a 13-member delegation competed alongside teams from 48 countries.

The Iranian delegation took part in six leagues—Rescue, Line Follower, Creativity, Rugby, Applied Engineering Design and Technical Report—and secured second place in Technical Report, as well as third place in Creativity in the under-12 category and third place in Robot Rugby.
