India’s technological future rests with its engineers, says Mizoram guv

Attachment Aizawl: Mizoram governor Gen Vijay Kumar Singh said nations no longer compete merely for markets but also for technological leadership and resilience.Singh made the remarks while attending the Institution of Engineers (India) Industry & Education Excellence Summit and Awards 2026 as the chief guest. Organised by the Institution of Engineers (India), the summit was held on Saturday at the SCOPE Convention Centre in New Delhi.The summit was organised under the theme “Engineering India’s Global Footprint: Technology, Talent & Trust.”Highlighting the unique context of northeast India, Singh said the region’s difficult terrain, ecological sensitivity and strategic location created demanding engineering challenges while also offering opportunities for innovation.“The northeast can become a living laboratory for resilient engineering in complex terrain. Mizoram, in particular, demonstrates why infrastructure must be terrain-sensitive, climate-resilient and digitally enabled,” he said.India’s long-term future, he added, rested firmly in the hands of engineers. He called upon them to contribute towards realising the vision of a developed India under Viksit Bharat @2047.Singh said engineers had occupied centre stage in India’s development history. India, he emphasised, possessed outstanding scientific and technical talent in large numbers, which needed to be harnessed effectively so that Indian engineering became synonymous with quality, reliability and trust. He urged engineers to make their best efforts towards achieving this goal.The Governor spoke about India’s position and the need for further progress in areas such as Digital India, the space programme, geospatial technology, defence engineering, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. He underlined the roles and responsibilities of engineers in these fields.“Merely producing large numbers of engineers is not enough,” he said, adding, “The engineer of the future must combine technical depth with systems thinking. We should judge engineering education not merely by how many degrees are awarded, but by what those engineers are capable of creating.”He also stressed that quality and standards should be treated as strategic assets so that India’s technology and talent earned the trust of other nations.The summit brought together industry leaders, policymakers, academics and engineering professionals to discuss India’s growing role in the global engineering and technology landscape.The Institution of Engineers (India), established in 1920, describes itself as the country’s largest multidisciplinary professional body of engineers.
