India and Indonesia Strengthen Defense Ties with Landmark Missile Deal
India plans to supply Indonesia with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra air-to-air missiles during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta. The $630 million deal would enhance India's defense exports and strategic ties amid growing competition with China in the Indo-Pacific region.
India is set to supply Indonesia with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra air-to-air missiles as part of a significant defense agreement, an official announced Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta marks the potential signing of this $630 million contract.
This deal positions Indonesia as the third nation to procure the BrahMos missiles, jointly manufactured by BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, illustrating a significant enhancement in India's defense export capabilities. The initiative also aims to solidify strategic relations with Southeast Asia's largest economy, notably amid increasing competition with China for regional influence.
Bilateral trade between the countries hit $28.15 billion in 2024-25, with Indonesia now as India's second-largest trading partner within the ASEAN bloc. Modi's discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will cover topics like maritime security and regional strategic coordination, furthering India's Act East policy and Indo-Pacific vision.
