Hundreds of people packed Whitehorse’s downtown core and Shipyards Park on July 1 as the city celebrated Canada’s 159th birthday.
Celebrations were centred around the park where the day began with a pancake breakfast. The morning also saw over a dozen new Canadians sworn in as official citizens in a ceremony at the legion.
Celebrations continued into the late morning with a parade through Whitehorse’s downtown core at 11 a.m. that saw hundreds of onlookers lining the streets as over a dozen paraders passed by.
All manner of floats adorned with red and white flags and banners cruised through the city, led by a mixed colour party that included members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Canadian Armed Forces, local air and army cadets, and roughly two dozen mounties dressed in the iconic red serge uniform.
The parade ended at Shipyards Park where festivities officially kicked off with a ceremonial flag raising and the cutting of a Canada Day themed cake by the Commissioner of the Yukon, Adeline Webber.
Throughout the afternoon hundreds of attendees milled about the park taking part in the various games set up, enjoying food from one of the many local food vendors in attendance, or enjoying live music and entertainment over at the main stage.
Luckily for everyone, the forecasted rain held off throughout the day with only a few light drops falling for a short time in the afternoon.
