HMD Touch AI: a button phone with artificial intelligence

The company HMD (Human Mobile Devices) presented a new Touch AI mobile phone, betting not so much on technical properties as on a well-known design. The novelty is clearly inspired by the Nokia Lumia line of the early 2010s and is aimed at users who value compact size and ease of use. At the same time, the manufacturer decided to complement the retro concept with modern functions based on artificial intelligence.

The device is intended primarily for the Chinese market, where the demand for similar niche models remains quite high.

The main feature of Touch AI is the appearance. The device received a one-piece body made of polycarbonate with straight edges and smoothly rounded side surfaces – this is the design that at one time became the hallmark of Nokia Lumia 800, Lumia 900 and Lumia 920 smartphones.

At the same time, HMD did not completely copy the devices of the past. A modern USB Type-C connector is used instead of the outdated Micro-USB, and the back cover can be replaced with one of the company’s colored panels. The manufacturer offers white, yellow and blue options, but they are sold separately.

Another detail was the programmable physical button on the upper face of the case. The user can independently assign it to start a flashlight, call emergency services or perform any other supported function.

Despite the well-known design, the device turned out to be much more compact than modern smartphones. It is equipped with a screen with a diagonal of only 3.2 inches, which today is more the exception than the rule.

Despite belonging to the budget segment, Touch AI received the function of artificial intelligence. They are implemented taking into account the Doubao language model developed by ByteDance, the owner of TikTok.

Using a neural network, the device can translate text between Chinese and English, as well as create images based on text descriptions. HMD makes these possibilities the main element of the positioning of the novelty, which explains the presence of the prefix AI in the name of the device.

At the same time, the manufacturer does not specify how actively calculations are performed directly on the device, and which operations take place in the cloud.

Touch AI works on 4G networks and supports the installation of two SIM cards. Also provided are Wi-Fi, hotspot mode and integration with the Alipay payment system, which remains one of the most popular contactless payment platforms in China.

Thus, the device combines the functionality of a classic push-button phone with the individual capabilities of modern smartphones.

The technical equipment of the novelty is as simple as possible. Both the main and front cameras received sensors with a resolution of 2 MP. They are designed primarily for video calls or shooting documents, and not full-fledged mobile photography.

The battery with a capacity of 1950 mAh is responsible for autonomy. Given the small display and modest hardware platform, such a reserve of energy should be enough for long-term work without recharging.

The price of HMD Touch AI in the Chinese market is 499 yuan, which is equivalent to about 70 US dollars.

HMD continues to develop the direction of devices that are difficult to classify in the usual categories of smartphones or push-button phones. In the case of Touch AI, the company combined the well-known design of the Windows Phone era with modern services based on artificial intelligence.

The device is a niche gadget for those nostalgic for the Nokia Lumia days and those who want a push-button device with modern communication features and AI shenanigans. Considering the price, it’s an interesting toy for the Chinese market, but as a mainstream smartphone in 2026, its capabilities are extremely limited.
