Grassroots politics, strategic leverage: Why Siddaramaiah picked Bengaluru over Delhi
The protracted political uncertainty over 'leadership change' in Karnataka has finally ended with veteran Congress leader Siddaramaiah tendering his resignation and setting the stage for deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar's elevation to the top post.
Minutes after tendering his resignation to the Governor, Siddaramaiah's long address to the press, considered procedural otherwise, was marked by deep political undertone, perhaps reflecting the leader's future strategy and his wish to play a vital role within state's political firmament.
With the resignation now formally submitted, the Congress leadership is expected to announce the next chief minister, marking a crucial political transition in Karnataka.
Siddaramaiah categorically said he had resigned after directions from the party leadership and insisted there was no pressure behind the move. "I have resigned voluntarily. There is no pressure on me," he said, adding that the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) will decide the next Chief Minister.
He further clarified that he had declined an offer from the party leadership to move to the Rajya Sabha. "The high command said I should go to Rajya Sabha, but I told them I will remain in Karnataka politics. I will continue active politics till my last breath," he said.
The AHINDA strategist also stated that he would continue in state politics and complete his political term as envisioned by the mandate. "People have elected me for five years. I will keep fighting against criminal forces," he said.
The Congress veteran's refusal is not an act of rebellion, but rather a calculated, long-term decision rooted in his absolute refusal to be uprooted from Karnataka’s vibrant grassroots politics.
Why Rajya Sabha berth wasn't a viable option?
For the AHINDA strategist, the move to the national capital is structurally unappealing. He recognised that entering the Rajya Sabha would effectively distance him from the state’s direct electoral theatre, neutralising his core strength as a mass leader who thrives on direct public contact.
Accepting a parliamentary seat would have allowed his regional rivals within both the opposition and his own party to consolidate their influence over the state unit in his absence. By remaining firmly anchored in Bengaluru, he ensures he stays indispensable to Karnataka’s political discourse, keeping his eyes on a possible future return to regional power.
Leveraging political capital for an 'assembly return'
By turning down the Rajya Sabha offer, Siddaramaiah preserved his strategic leverage within the Pradesh Congress. It allows him to transition smoothly into the role of Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, keeping him at the absolute centre of Karnataka’s daily governance debates and media spotlight.
This constant state-level visibility and active engagement ensure that when the political pendulum possibly swings back, he remains the most viable, popular, and authoritative choice to lead the state once again, vindicating his gamble to reject the comfortable corridors of New Delhi.
