Google Maps Gets ‘Ask Maps’ Gemini AI To Plan Your Travels
Google is continuing to enhance the utility of Google Maps. After introducing “Ask Maps” in March and rolling it out to several markets in June, the company is expanding its AI-powered tool.
Driven by Google Gemini, the feature allows users to interact with the application using natural language to receive personalized recommendations.
In a recent application update (version 26.29.01.946673643), the functionality of “Ask Maps” has been significantly broadened. Previously limited to the main screen and specific location lists, the feature is now being integrated directly into route planning.
When users search for driving, walking, or cycling directions, conversational AI suggestion bubbles appear directly below the transport mode selection. These bubbles offer quick, context-aware queries such as:
Selecting these options or tapping the dedicated “Ask Maps” button opens a dedicated chat interface. Here, users can converse with the AI to ask specific questions about their upcoming journey. Notably, public transit is currently the only mode of transportation that does not display these AI prompt buttons.

At present, this expanded functionality is not yet widely available, having been activated experimentally through an investigation of the Google Maps application code. However, given the advanced state of development, a public rollout is expected in the near future.
This expansion is part of a broader push by Google to inject artificial intelligence into its navigation ecosystem. Other upcoming AI-driven features for Google Maps include automated assistance for correct place-name pronunciation, business management, and the capability to make restaurant reservations.
