GCSE maths results disappointing, says deputy

Teachers and senior leaders will be looking at ways to improve on this year's GCSE results after some scores were "a little bit patchy," an education boss has said.

A total of 624 students opened their results on Thursday, with those in Guernsey and Alderney achieving a 71.2% pass rate for grades 4 and above.

Deputy Paul Montague said this year's maths grades, however, were "disappointing" noting teachers and senior leaders will "look at those results really carefully".

He said there was "some good progress and some other areas where we want to see a real improvement" but stressed it "always takes time to process these results and there's so much context".

Speaking to BBC Radio Guernsey, the president of the committee for education, sport & culture said: "We've got some warning signs, one or two of the initial numbers that have come out are a little bit disappointing, a little bit patchy."

He added: "There's some really good results coming from different areas so a little bit disappointed in some ways but as with all these things it takes a while to process."

Montague said a breakdown of school specific results would be released in the coming weeks.

His team will then work out how best to support individual schools while looking "at where departments and subject areas have done really well across the secondary school partnership".

He added: "Maths is particularly tricky. It's very much a confidence game and it's not something that you can turn around really quickly in a young person's life because it's so foundational - the building blocks have to be there.

"I think that's some of the questions we're going to be asking of that set of results which dipped this year."

In 2025, 72% of all Guernsey's GCSE and equivalent results were graded 4 and above.

While this year's average dipped slightly (71.2%) the figures remained higher than grades across England, Wales and Northern Ireland this year marked at 4/C and above (67.3%).
