From startups to sports: How MS Dhoni built his Rs 1000
From startups to sports: How MS Dhoni built his Rs 1000-crore plus business empire
MS Dhoni remains one of India’s most commercially successful cricketers even after his international retirement in 2020. In 2026, Moneycontrol estimated his net worth at around $127 million, while other contemporary estimates on several platforms such as CrickTracker, HindMedia, and many more, place it in the Rs 1,060–1,200 crore range. However, there is no publicly available audited statement from Dhoni establishing an exact personal net-worth figure. The Rs 1,000-crore-plus figure should therefore be treated as an estimate rather than a confirmed financial disclosure.
A substantial component of Dhoni’s career earnings has come from the Indian Premier League. He has represented Chennai Super Kings since the inaugural IPL season in 2008, apart from the two seasons when the franchise was suspended. His salary has reached as high as Rs 15 crore in individual seasons, while his retention price was Rs 12 crore between 2022 and 2024. For IPL 2025, CSK retained Dhoni for Rs 4 crore after he became eligible to be classified as an uncapped player under the league’s rules. (Cricbuzz)

Dhoni’s IPL earnings over his career are estimated to have crossed Rs 190 crore. In the IPL 2025 Auction report, it is mentioned Rs 196.65 crore. While different databases produce slightly different cumulative figures depending on how bonuses and contract structures are calculated, the documented season-by-season salaries demonstrate that the IPL has been one of the most important contributors to his overall wealth. His continuing participation in the league also provides him with an income stream more than a decade after his international retirement.
Endorsements represent another major pillar of Dhoni’s financial success. His commercial appeal has remained remarkably strong despite his retirement from international cricket. The latest Kroll celebrity brand valuation, covering 2025 and reported in August 2026, puts Dhoni’s celebrity brand value at $115.3 million. The figure places him among India’s most valuable celebrity brands and demonstrates the continuing commercial strength of the former India captain. (Mint, 2026).
Dhoni has also diversified beyond cricket through investments in start-ups and emerging businesses. According to Economic Times reporting based on Tracxn data, his investment portfolio has included companies operating in areas such as electric mobility, fintech, drone technology, alternative proteins and sports technology. The reported portfolio includes BluSmart, Khatabook, CARS24, Garuda Aerospace, Centricity, Rigi, EMotorad, Shaka Harry, 7Ink Brews, Tagda Raho and Run Adam.
One of his most prominent investments is Garuda Aerospace. Economic Times reported in October 2024 that Dhoni invested a further Rs 4 crore in the Chennai-based drone company, taking his stake to 1.1%. The company subsequently raised Rs 100 crore in Series B funding at a reported valuation of $250 million, highlighting the potential significance of Dhoni’s equity investment, although its present value cannot be calculated without updated information on his exact holding and subsequent dilution.
Garuda’s expansion has continued, with the company filing confidentially for an IPO in 2026. The Times of India in April, 2026 reported that the proposed issue could raise around Rs 1,000 crore, including Rs 750 crore through a fresh issue. Garuda reported Rs 118 crore in revenue and Rs 17.5 crore profit in FY2025, further illustrating the growth of one of the businesses backed by Dhoni.
Endorsements keep Dhoni’s commercial value high
Dhoni’s wealth, therefore, is no longer dependent solely on his earnings as a cricketer. His financial interests span IPL income, endorsements, start-up equity, business ventures and sports-related investments. This diversification is particularly significant because equity holdings can appreciate independently of an athlete’s playing career, potentially creating long-term wealth beyond conventional salary and endorsement income.
Ultimately, the most responsible assessment is that MS Dhoni is a Rs 1,000-crore-plus personality by current media estimates, but an exact personal net worth cannot be independently verified from publicly available records.
