Jack Campbell has announced his retirement from professional hockey at 34, closing one of the NHL's strangest goaltending careers.

The Mug NHL flagged the news this week, spotted through an Instagram post where Campbell now describes himself as a former NHL goaltender.

His new bio lists him as an identity and performance coach, a clean break from the game that defined most of his adult life.

Campbell was drafted 11th overall by Dallas back in 2010, once considered an elite goaltending prospect before it took him years to stick in the NHL.

His peak came with Toronto. He posted a .921 save percentage in 2020-21, then followed it with 31 wins and five shutouts the year after.

For that stretch, Campbell genuinely looked like a legitimate No. 1 goaltender in the league.

The $25 million Edmonton deal never worked out

Edmonton signed him to a five-year, $25 million contract in 2022, and the fit never came together.

His inconsistency resurfaced almost immediately. He lost the starting job to Stuart Skinner and eventually got sent down to the AHL.

Campbell spent his final NHL-adjacent years with Detroit's organization, mostly playing for the Grand Rapids Griffins as organizational depth.

He finishes with 176 NHL games, 93 wins, a 2.76 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage across his career.

Teammates around the league consistently described him as one of the most well-liked personalities in hockey, regardless of how his numbers looked in a given month.

That mix, real talent paired with real inconsistency, is exactly why Campbell became one of the sport's more familiar what-if stories.
