Flooding from an early-morning storm has led to several roadway closures in north Edmonton on Wednesday.

The City of Edmonton is warning motorists to avoid Yellowhead Trail from 97 Street to 184 Street and surrounding roadways due to flooding. In addition, on-ramps to the expressway were closed while crews were on scene, diverting traffic.

Other intersections also experienced traffic disruptions due to traffic signal issues, according to the city. Motorists were being advised to avoid St. Albert Trail at 128 Avenue, 142 Street at 91 Avenue, and 97 Street at 124 Avenue.

Edmontonians could be in for a severe thunderstorm on Wednesday, according to Environment Canada.

In a late Wednesday morning forecast, Environment Canada warned that conditions were ripe for the development of severe thunderstorms that were capable of bringing strong winds, hail, heavy rain and possibly tornadoes to the Edmonton region in the afternoon and evening. The threat of damaging storms also included central and eastern Alberta in the late hours.

Wednesday's blast of rain arrived on the heels of a weekend storm that battered the Edmonton region, downing power lines, flooding city attractions, and scuttling festivals.
